The History of the Preston Valley Artisan Trail: A Celebration of Art, Community, and Craftsmanship

The Preston Valley Artisan Trail has become a vibrant showcase of local talent, creativity, and community spirit in the Preston Valley region. This annual event, which has grown steadily since its inception in 2018, highlights the incredible artisans, craftsmen, and makers that call this picturesque area home. Here's a look back at the trail’s history and evolution, illustrating how it has blossomed into a beloved fixture in the region’s cultural calendar.

2018: The Beginning of an Artistic Journey

The story of the Preston Valley Artisan Trail began in November 2018, when Promote Preston, a sub-committee of the Yabberup Craft Group (YCA), organized the first-ever art trail. Dubbed "Art Naturally - Preston River Valley," the event aimed to showcase local artists and artisans while coinciding with the open garden weekend in the area. The event was an immediate success, drawing large crowds and immense positive feedback, prompting its continuation.

2019-2023: Establishing the Artisan Trail

Following the trail’s success, the Yabberup Craft Group took over the reins, with Cynthia Dix stepping up as the coordinator. Cynthia, a practicing artist with a background in marketing and journalism, was key in organising the event from 2019 to 2023. Working alongside Bev Giudice and a dedicated committee, Cynthia secured major funding from the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup to sustain and grow the event. Her skills in marketing and advertising helped garner regional TV coverage and widespread promotional material.

Cynthia’s contribution went beyond her organisational efforts—she was also a participant, showcasing her art in Mumballup. Although she has since passed the baton to Ellie Clare, Cynthia remains proud of her work and believes Ellie’s modern marketing strategies will take the event to new heights.
